It’s always fun to watch videos about local businesses on social media. Whether it’s TikTok, Instagram, or Facebook, getting the scoop on great food, fun activities, or a service business that truly cares about the people they serve is something I enjoy. I love discovering local businesses I’ve never been to before through influencers who showcase them in their videos.
Recently, I came across Earl Waller, @iamjustearl, a Central Texas influencer, while he was filming at a ribbon cutting event for a new Asian dessert spot in my hometown. They serve honey toast, milk teas, and other desserts. Someone mentioned that he was a big deal, so I went over to introduce myself. As we started talking, I realized I had already seen several of his videos online.
Earl is someone who genuinely leads from the heart. He has a strong love for God, people, and small businesses. We set up time to meet and talked more about his work as an influencer and how influencer marketing can help drive foot traffic into local businesses and increase sales. What stood out to me is that influencer marketing is much more accessible for small business owners than people may think.
I asked Earl questions about how small businesses should approach influencer marketing. Here is what he shared.
What sales lift should Central Texas retail brands expect from influencer campaigns, and how can they prove the content caused those results?
"Sales lift can vary, but strong local influencer campaigns typically drive immediate spikes in foot traffic and same-day or weekend sales—especially when paired with a clear call to action. The best way to track this is through unique phrases like “Earl sent me,” custom discount codes, or offer-based redemptions. When businesses consistently hear that phrase or see those redemptions, it becomes a very tangible measure of ROI tied directly to the content."
How should retail brands verify a Central Texas influencer’s audience actually shops locally versus just scrolling?
"The biggest indicator is not follower count—it’s community engagement. Brands should look for creators whose content shows real interactions with local businesses, recognizable locations, and conversations in the comments from people in the area. Even better, ask for proof of past campaigns—foot traffic increases, sell-outs, or testimonials from other local business owners."
For brands targeting multiple Central Texas counties, how should influencers adapt content to work across different markets?
"Content should stay authentic but be context-aware. What resonates in Austin may differ from Waco or Killeen. The key is storytelling that highlights the experience and people behind the business, while subtly tying it into each audience. For example, in smaller communities like Killeen or Temple, there’s a stronger emphasis on relationships and supporting local—so the messaging leans more community-first than trend-driven."
What are the best examples of influencers driving actual foot traffic to Central Texas stores, and what made those campaigns successful?
"The most successful campaigns I’ve been a part of are rooted in storytelling, not just promotion. When people feel connected to the owner’s story, they show up. Add a clear incentive (exclusive menu item, discount, or limited-time offer), and it creates urgency. The combination of emotional connection + actionable CTA is what drives real foot traffic—not just views. Some of my most successful ones can be found on my website."
What pricing should Central Texas retailers expect when hiring influencers for campaigns?
"Pricing can vary widely depending on the creator, deliverables, and expected outcomes. For small businesses, entry-level collaborations may focus on awareness. However, for businesses looking for stronger storytelling and more intentional community impact, I typically offer two primary options:
$500 Community Byte – A high-quality storytelling feature designed to introduce your business to the community and build awareness.
$750 Community Byte (Premium) – A more in-depth, higher-impact feature with stronger emphasis on driving foot traffic, deeper storytelling, and overall engagement.
The difference ultimately comes down to the level of depth, strategy, and expected outcome—whether the goal is awareness or more measurable community action."
How should Central Texas retailers structure influencer relationships?
"Start simple—test the waters with a single campaign, but build with long-term in mind. The most successful partnerships come from consistency. When the community sees a business multiple times through a trusted voice, that’s when real trust—and repeat customers—are built."
What excites me about influencer marketing is the immediate impact it can have on sales for a small business. People check reviews before they decide to try a business. They trust recommendations from friends, and when they hear something positive, they are much more likely to check it out for themselves.
That is why influencer marketing works. When someone watches a video from a trusted local influencer, it feels like getting a recommendation from a friend. They get to see what the business offers, hear the story behind it, and connect with the owner on a deeper level. When that kind of connection happens, the business is not just getting a customer, they are getting the right customer.
With so many ads and marketing messages in front of people every day, it is easy for customers to tune everything out. Paid ads do not always deliver the return businesses hope for, and organic marketing takes time to build momentum. Influencer marketing bridges that gap. It creates a meaningful, engaging experience that feels natural for the customer and more rewarding for the business owner. Influencer marketing creates content that lives online and continues working for the business, reinforcing its brand story over time.
