The foundation of our faith is found in Paul's letter to the Corinthian church which clearly presents the Good News, 1 Corinthians 15:1-4:
"Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:"
What happened at Jesus' crucifixion was foretold in Psalm 22, written approximately 1,000 years before Jesus was born and about 400 years before the Romans used crucifixion for public executions:
"My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" (Psalm 22:1). Jesus said this when He was on the cross before He died. It was mentioned in Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34.
"All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him" (Psalm 22:7-8). This scripture foretold how the Pharisees would mock Jesus while He was on the cross which was recorded in Matthew 27:39-43.
"I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture." (Psalm 22:14-18). This describes Jesus' firsthand physical experience during the crucifixion and seeing the Roman soldiers casting lots for His tunic after they split up His garments. This account was described in John 19:24.
Approximately 700 years before Christ lived, the prophet Isaiah explained why Jesus had to suffer:
"But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed." (Isaiah 53:5). All 4 gospels mention that Jesus was scourged in John 19:1, Matthew 27:26, Mark 15:15, and Luke 23:22. Scourging was a gruesome whipping.
"He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth." (Isaiah 53:7). This scripture foretold that Jesus would not defend himself during His trial before being crucified, which was described in Matthew 27:12-14, Mark 14:60-61, and Luke 23:9
"And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth." (Isaiah 53:9). Jesus was crucified with criminals which is described in Luke 23:32-33 and Matthew 27:38. Both Matthew 27:57-60 and John 19:38-42 describe how Jesus was given an honorable burial after His death.
"Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors." (Isaiah 53:10-12).
The Bible also foretold that Jesus would be resurrected and His body would not decay:
"For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thy Holy One to see corruption." (Psalm 16:10). In Acts 2:24-27 and Acts 13:35, the apostles Peter and Paul refer to this scripture being fulfilled when God raised Jesus from the dead. Psalm 16 was also written around 1,000 years before Christ lived.
"The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. " (Psalm 110:1). Hebrews 10:12 confirms that after Jesus offered one sacrifice for many, He sat at the right hand of God. Ephesians 1:20, 1 Peter 3:22 , and Mark 16:19 all mention that Jesus now sits at the right hand of God. Psalm 110 was written about 1000 years before Jesus lived.
The reason Jesus had to shed His blood goes back to this law established in Leviticus 17:11:
"For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh atonement for the soul."
While the Old Testament sacrifices in Leviticus were temporary and only "covered" sin, Jesus’ sacrifice was different. When He shed His blood, He removed sin entirely—past, present, and future. He paid the debt in full, once and for all.
This is explained in Hebrews 9:12 "Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us."
Jesus paid for all our sins with the shedding of His blood, His death, burial and resurrection, but you must make the personal choice in your heart and mind to believe and trust in what Jesus did for the remission of your sins if you want to accept His salvation for you. This is how you "receive" the gift.
Heaven and hell are very real places, and every person will spend eternity in one of them. The Bible calls hell the lake of fire and brimstone in Revelation 20:10-15.
The scriptures are clear that God is going to judge every person that has ever lived by their works on earth. And He made a way for us to be forgiven for every sin we ever committed through Jesus. Romans 6:23: "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord".
While God is merciful to those who cannot yet distinguish right from wrong, there is an "age of accountability" where we become responsible for our own choices. At that point, we must face a difficult truth: no amount of good deeds can erase a past sin.
The scriptures confirm this universal condition:
Romans 3:10: "As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:"
Romans 3:23: "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;"
Isaiah 64:6: "But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. "
If we look honestly into the mirror of God’s law, we must admit that we have all "missed the mark". Whether it is a "small" lie, taking something that wasn't ours, or harboring anger in our hearts, these actions show that we have fallen short. Just as a person cannot avoid the consequences of a crime simply because they did other good things, our own works cannot remove the stain of our sin before a Holy God.
Because we cannot achieve God's perfect standard on our own, we are in desperate need of someone who can. This is why Jesus came. As the only one who never sinned, He was the only one qualified to make the atonement for our sins as the spotless Lamb of God.
2 Corinthians 5:21: "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."
1 John 3:5: "And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin."
God is a Holy Judge. He will not simply 'ignore' the debt of sin; it must be paid. Right now, the receipt for your sin debt paid in full is sitting before you, signed with the blood of Jesus. But this payment only benefits the ones who accept it.
If you choose to stand on your own works and carry that debt yourself, you will stand before God as a guilty sinner and spend eternity burning in hell; forever. Or you can choose to put your faith and trust in Jesus’ finished work alone and walk into eternal life. The payment is made. The door is open. The choice to receive this gift is yours, and it is the most important decision you will ever make.
Make the choice to receive this free gift now. Today is the day for salvation. No one knows how long they will live. Once your life is over, you don't get another chance to change your mind about trusting in what Jesus did to pay for your sins and accept His free gift if you don't choose His salvation while you're still alive.
