In some circles, selling has gotten a bad reputation. If people think about sales and picture someone trying to convince another person to buy something they don't really want or need, it gives them that icky feeling no one wants. Most people don’t like pressure, closing techniques, scripts or someone who won't take no for an answer.
The most effective way to sell is to understand the person you're talking to and determine whether what you offer is actually going to help them. When you are talking to the right person about something they need, the conversation doesn't feel like a sales pitch. It’s a genuine conversation about what they’re trying to accomplish, what isn't working for them and whether your product or service can help.
A lot of small business owners are good at what they do but don't necessarily feel comfortable with sales. They can get nervous when they have to talk about price. When they think about selling they can get lost instead of having a natural conversation about what the customer is looking for and what they can offer.
A simple sales system gives you a path to follow. It helps you know what to say and ask a potential customer, when to explain your solution, how to talk about the investment and what should happen next. You always have a real conversation with each person, and you’ll always know where you are in the process during the conversation. That makes things easier.
People want authentic experiences with real people who are sincere and have integrity. Using a sales system helps you do that. It gives you an outline and process that guides a conversation to show you care. Every conversation can accommodate what each person needs and together you can decide whether they are the right fit for your business or if you can really help them.
The goal is to be confident when you’re talking to someone. When you’re talking to a prospect, you need the kind of confidence you have when you tell someone your name. You don’t waver on what your name is. You don’t doubt your name is your name. When you know what you’re doing in a sales call, people will buy from you when you have the solution that gives them what they are looking for. A sales system makes that easier.
Part of a sales system needs to identify who your ideal customer is. It’s your target market. Those are the people you went into business to serve or take care of with your products or services. A sales system helps you communicate why you do what you do and how you do it well. It’s not about deliverables. It’s about what you solved for your customer.
When you know your audience and are providing what they’re looking for, sales become easier. Your right customers will want to work with you when you listen to what they want and help them get what they need. Don't try to sell to everyone. Someone who is allergic to chocolate is not going to buy your chocolate chip cookies regardless of what you tell them about the ingredients and the taste.
How I’d Like To Help
If sales is frustrating or bringing in new business is just not happening enough, chances are you could use a different perspective or at least sit down and think about what you’re doing with a new approach. It’s easy to get busy doing a lot and just wing it until you figure things out. You can read books and try to take some of this and some of that but, with sales, that doesn’t always work.
I learned to be a structured person when I flew airplanes when I was younger. Before you get in an airplane you have already decided where you’re going to go. You have evaluated what you have to get there. And you have a pretty good idea of what you’re going to do when you need to land the plane. There are checklists and procedures to make sure you’re operating the plane correctly and at the very least, know you have enough fuel for your flight.
When I started selling internet marketing services, I always had a process, a kind of outline or roadmap to follow because that always showed me where I was in a conversation. I had a system set up for emails and follow ups. I used what I learned in my life to have good conversations with people and I became a top-performing closer. And that was the foundation of the sales system I used which I share in my sales workbook, “Sales Without Being Pushy: Write a Simple Sales System You Will Actually Use". It’s available on Amazon
And I’ll make you a deal. If you buy the workbook, I will give you a 30 minute free one-on-one sales consultation to help get you going. Email me at laura@416sales.com and put, ”I bought the workbook” in the subject line and include a picture of you holding the workbook “Sales Without Being Pushy” (or a copy of your purchase receipt). I’ll send you my calendar link so you can book a Zoom meeting with me. It will be fun!
Happy Sales To You!
Best,
Laura
