Most business owners don’t think too much about what happens after they close for the day. The phone rolls to voicemail, and the assumption is that if someone really wants to reach a business, they’ll leave a message.
That used to be true more than it is today. Customer behavior has changed, and more people are reaching out outside of normal business hours, especially in the evening. Instead of leaving messages, many simply hang up and move on to the next option. It’s not something most businesses are able to track, but it’s happening more often than they realize.
There’s been a noticeable shift in when customers are contacting businesses. A large percentage of calls now happen outside the traditional 9–5 window, with a significant number coming in during the 5pm–9pm evening hours.
At the same time, most businesses are still handling those calls the same way they always have, by sending them to voicemail. The problem is that voicemail no longer works the way it used to. Most people don’t leave a message, and they don’t call back. They simply move on to someone who answers the phone.
This isn’t just about missed calls. It’s about missed opportunities that business owners don’t even know are happening. Inbound leads are strong. The customer found the business and decided to call.
If someone calls after hours and hangs up, there’s no message, no voicemail record, and no way for a business to follow up. From a business owner's perspective, it looks like nothing happened. But on the other end, that person was actively trying to do business.
Over time, that adds up. A few missed calls here and there may not seem significant in the moment, but those are real customers making decisions in real time. In many cases, they end up working with a competitor who answered first. That could mean thousands of dollars in lost revenue each month.
One of the main reasons this goes overlooked is because most phone systems don’t give a business owner visibility into what they’re missing. If someone doesn’t leave a message, there’s nothing to track and no clear signal that anything needs to change.
Because of that, it’s easy to assume things are working as they should. In reality, there can be a steady flow of after-hours calls that never turn into conversations simply because there’s nothing in place to capture them.
This is where things have started to shift. Instead of sending every call to voicemail, businesses now have the option to have calls answered by AI phone agents when they’re not available.
AI phone agents can step in to respond to incoming calls, gather basic information, and help move the conversation forward. It doesn’t change how a business runs, but it does remove the gap when a customer reaches out and hangs up when they get voicemail instead of a person to talk to.
That gap is where most opportunities are lost.
Businesses that implement AI phone agents typically see an increase in revenue because after-hours calls become new inbound leads. Instead of calls going unanswered or going to voicemail, there is a system in place to interact with a prospect right away, capture basic information, and keep the interaction moving.
Today’s customers want real communication. They research what they need online before they pick up the phone to call someone. When a customer reaches out to a business, they are gathering the last pieces of information they need to make a final decision. When a business has an AI phone agent in place, the customer is taken care of when they call. In many cases, it allows businesses to stay engaged with potential customers who would have otherwise moved on.
In addition to after-hours calls, when an influx of calls come in during business hours all at once, an AI phone agent can step in to handle the overload so every caller is greeted personally and professionally. AI phone agents can answer thousands of calls simultaneously exactly the same way. This alleviates stress for office staff. It allows them to focus on customers without interruptions and gives them the helping hand they need without having to hire additional personnel.
Not every business operates the same way, but this is worth thinking about if phone calls are an important part of how the company brings in new business.
If a business is not always available to answer the phone and the system relies on voicemail after hours or kicks callers to voicemail when office staff are handling other calls, there’s a good chance calls are being missed without realizing it. Even a small number of missed calls each week can represent lost revenue over time.
For businesses that rely on inbound calls, this is one of the easiest areas to increase sales without changing anything else about how they operate.
If you’re curious about how this works, I interviewed the owner of my AI company, Love Tech Labs, James Love, to talk about AI phone agents. He gave me a breakdown of how he solves this problem for small business owners. You can read it here:

Most businesses focus on what they can see: calls answered, customers served, and orders completed. But growth often comes from paying attention to what’s being missed.
After-hours calls are one of those areas that has changed quietly over time. Taking a closer look at how your business handles them can make a bigger difference than most people expect.
