Artificial intelligence is everywhere in business conversations right now. New tools appear almost daily, and countless experts are offering advice about how companies should be using them. For many business owners, that flood of information can make AI feel confusing or overwhelming.
After attending a presentation by AI coach Dr. Jeff Bullock, I followed up with him with a few questions about how businesses can approach AI in a more practical way. What stood out to me was how straightforward and honest his perspective is. Instead of focusing on hype, Jeff focuses on helping people understand how to work with these tools productively.
Here are the questions I asked and Jeff’s responses.
Dr. Jeff Bullock:
“They treat it like a search engine. Type a question, get an answer. That is the lowest value use of these tools. AI is a reasoning engine. You should be using it the way you would use a sharp advisor. Give it context about your business, your customer, your goals, and then ask it to think with you. The people getting the best results are the ones having real conversations with it, not just asking it trivia questions.”
Dr. Jeff Bullock:
“Feed it your best writing first. Take three or four pieces you are proud of and ask the AI to analyze your tone, your cadence, the words you tend to reach for. Once it defines that profile, tell it to use those voice guidelines for everything it generates. Now it sounds like you, not like a robot. The other piece is to never publish a first draft. AI gives you a starting point. You are the editor. That is where your voice comes through.”
Dr. Jeff Bullock:
“Take a piece of marketing copy you already have and ask AI to grade it. Tell it who your ideal customer is and ask for three specific ways the copy could be more persuasive for that audience. You will see improvements immediately, and you did not have to start from scratch. That is how you used it after my presentation, and you saw the results the same day.”
After Jeff’s presentation, I decided to try one of the ideas he suggested. I had recently written a guest blog with the help of an AI tool for another website, so I asked another AI tool to evaluate the article and suggest ways it could be stronger for the audience it was written for. The feedback helped refine the message and improve the overall flow of the piece. I went back and forth between the tools a couple of times to revise the final draft. The website owner loved the blog and it’s scheduled to be published. When I asked Jeff what simple step a business owner could take to begin using AI more effectively, he pointed directly to that approach.
Dr. Jeff Bullock:
“Find your energy leak. Every business owner has that one task they dread or put off every week. For some people it is writing social posts. For others it is follow-up emails or proposals. Whatever it is, use AI to generate the first draft. It is always easier to edit something than to stare at a blank page. Start there, build confidence, and then expand from there.”
One thing Jeff’s answers made clear is that many businesses aren’t struggling because AI is complicated — they’re struggling because they haven’t yet learned how to approach it. Once people start treating AI as a thinking partner rather than a search tool, the results change dramatically.
In my own experience, that shift took some time as well. Like many people, I started by experimenting with AI just to see what it could do. But the real value started to appear once I understood how these tools could help with real work — improving writing, refining marketing messages, and removing friction from tasks that used to take much longer.
Jeff’s perspective stands out because it’s practical. Instead of promising shortcuts or magic solutions, he encourages business owners to start small, focus on real problems, and build confidence using the tools in ways that make their work easier.
For businesses trying to navigate the rapidly changing world of artificial intelligence, that kind of grounded advice is often exactly what they need.
